MEMORIAL DAY
MAY 26, 2008
STATEMENT OF MISSION
We believe God calls us to share the good news of Jesus Christ. To be a faithful, growing church and strengthen congregational life for this mission, we work toward Christian unity, share Christ’s redeeming love that the human family might be made whole, welcome all people for worship and fellowship, and minister to the needs of others by sharing and caring.
A NEW VIEW
FROM THE BRIDGE
Start Where We Are
This interim was quite different than many. Someone has said that some churches are, “like lost balls in high weeds”, indicating:
They have little sense of history.
Don’t know where they are.
Don’t know where they have been.
Don’t know where they are going.
That is not true with Red Bridge. In many interims the church has to go through divisive, healing processes, with strained relationships. Such is not the case here. The tragic loss of such a beloved pastor brought disbelief, shock, and intense hurt that still exists and rightfully so. But, if anything, it has united the congregation in a deeper spirit of love.
Some churches have hidden strained relationships that people tiptoe around. Some have said we are like family, but some families are at times dysfunctional. There are, at times, controlling issues that keep churches from having a positive impact in their community, especially when there are those who are hesitant to release control. At times there are those who have worked hard in many positions who think seniority wields extra power. They could become gatekeepers who don’t want to change or don’t want to give up cherished ideas or positions. We have dealt some with this. However, all that I have dealt with are open to reasonable thought-through changes and are most encouraging for younger participation and responsibilities in leadership.
A new pastor can bring enthusiasm and excitement, but churches grow when each member accepts their ministry, shares the excitement of their faith, and actively and verbally let people know what Christ has done for them.
Remember, the angels in heaven rejoice when one soul is saved.
---Ralph
